It will introduce:

  • how to be a good design student.

The two-hour session is scheduled to coincide with two events. The first is the MA Expo Private View on the same evening, an opportunity to see final postgraduate degree show work across a broad range of creative disciplines. The second is the publication of The Design Student's Handbook, written by Jane Bartholomew and Steve Rutherford. Jane will be the leader of this session. You will receive a copy of The Design Student's Handbook on the day.

Jane Bartholomew is a lecturer in textile design and the quality manager in the School of Art and Design at Nottingham Trent University. As an experienced design practitioner, she has run her own textile design business and undertaken consultancy work. Her interest in the ways students learn fuels her present research interests. Steve Rutherford is a lecturer in furniture and product design in the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University. He has wide experience working in the industry as an ergonomist, design consultant and industrial designer.

About The Design Student's Handbook
It is the first comprehensive, essential design book aimed primarily at those studying, or thinking of going on to study, any of the design disciplines. It has been devised as a crucial handbook and a core text book for all undergraduate students. Further and Higher Education, the industry and the students have long awaited a book that describes and illustrates the differences between the disciplines. It covers:

  • graphics
  • fashion and textiles
  • three-dimensional design
  • spatial design
  • interactive media design
  • theatre, film and television design
  • craft

The book is brought to life by quotes, stories and career profiles by students, designers and industry specialists. As well as mapping the design disciplines, it covers key practical, theoretical and cultural principles, all hugely important to students wanting to understand their practice, with chapters on colour, aesthetics, creativity and innovation, history, culture and context, sustainability, inclusive design and socially responsible design.
