The BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design is designed to develop skills and understanding in a broad range of Art, Craft and Design disciplines. It provides a firm foundation for those wishing to follow a career in Art and Design through Higher Education, apprenticeships or employment. - Select and use a variety of appropriate media techniques and technology to create images (2-D) and objects (3-D)
- Generate work to meet assignment briefs
- Reference the work of artists and designers, both historical and contemporary
- Develop skills in relation to professional practice
- Present exhibitions of your work within our Wedge gallery and project space
- Engage in seminars, lectures and critical debates with visiting artists and creative professionals
Five mandatory units:
- Ideas and Concepts - 10 credits
- Contextual influences - 10 credits
- Visual Recording - 10 credits
- Materials, Techniques and Processes - 10 credits
- Communication through Art and Design - 10 credits
Thirteen specialist Units which may include:
- Product Design (inc. graphic communication, digital manipulation
- Photography
- Ceramics
- Narrative image making
- 3D Design
- Mixed media
- Fine arts (e.g. painting, sculpture, printmaking
- Professional practice
- Generating fine art ideas
- FMP Final Major Project
What qualifications do I need?
Entry requirements:
- 4 GCSEs at Grades A-C including English or Maths OR 5 GCSEs at Grades A-C excluding English or Maths. Also including 1 art or design GCSE
- BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design at merit grade or above
- A portfolio of your work will be examined at interview as well all qualifications to assess suitability and skills level
- A real desire to develop your creative skills and become part of creative culture

Are there any additional costs?
Please note that students will be required to purchase small items of personal equipment (such as art materials and paper) during the course. Prices and detail of kit list will be available from your course tutor near the start of the course. Additional costs will be required to cover study visits to local, National and International Galleries and Museums. Lichfield Campus is unique in that it houses Lichfield City's first contemporary art gallery. The Wedge gallery and project space is integral to the art and design education programme. The gallery attracts many amateur and professional, local national and international visiting artists and art groups who lead a series of seminars, tutorials and lectures engaging in pure research with our learners. The Wedge gallery is in constant use by our learners who organise and curate their own individual and group exhibitions to test their visual communication and presentation skills as an important part of their professional practice.
