This course focuses on marketing and brand strategy in the fashion and lifestyle industry. Ideal for people who are both strategic and creative thinkers, you will learn how to create a distinct voice for a brand. You will then look at how best to communicate the brand’s message to consumers, through strategic delivery (who, when and how) and creative visual communication (advertising, PR, social media).

Fashion Marketing and Branding combines the key elements of marketing and branding with fashion awareness, and bridges the gap between the creative and strategic areas of the industry.

This course is ideal if you want a career in the fashion industry, working in a business rather than design role. You’ll need to be a strategic thinker, but also able to demonstrate a creative flair.

You will be given a solid grounding in marketing and branding theory, and have the opportunity to put this into practice. We’ll teach you how to use software like Adobe In-Design and Illustrator, so you can develop your creative ideas to communicate and influence consumers.

You don't need a creative portfolio to apply for this course.

How will I learn?

You will be taught through a variety of teaching and learning experiences that will include:

  • lectures and briefings
  • seminars
  • tutorials
  • visual communication workshops
  • team work
  • peer and self-evaluation
  • live projects
  • individual and group presentations
  • study visits.

You will also be involved in self-directed project work where you will have the support of NOW, our virtual learning environment.

In all years of this course you will spend around 25 - 30% of your time in scheduled learning. This includes things like:

  • lectures
  • seminars
  • tutorials
  • workshops.

This figure doesn't include additional contact time such as:

  • study visits
  • personal tutorials
  • guest speakers.

For the remaining time you will undertake self-directed independent study which may be spent researching or completing coursework, either at University or at home.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment for this course is 100% coursework.

You will be assessed at the end of each module and awarded a grade band (1st, 2.1. 2,2. etc). You will receive feedback throughout the module in verbal and written format. This feedback will come from both staff and peers and you will be required to reflect upon your own work and development.

How you are assessed will depend on the individual module, but may take the form of:

  • reports
  • other written documents
  • research portfolios
  • reflective learning journal; and
  • presentations.

To progress through the course you must achieve 120 credits each year. Your final degree mark will be based 100% on your final year work.

Degree Shows

In your final year you will exhibit your work as part of our Degree Shows Festival. This event includes all final-year students across NTU’s Art and Design based courses, and is a great platform for you to showcase your work to members of the creative industries.

You will also have the chance to be selected to exhibit your work at the prestigious Graduate Fashion Week in London, another opportunity to have your work viewed by members of the fashion industry.

Links with industry

This course is committed to offering you experiences that will enhance your understanding of the industry’s requirements.

Live projects and opportunities to visit companies and trade fairs are an important part of the course and this, together with support from course staff and NTU's Careers Centre, will prepare you well for employment.

You will be actively encouraged and support to undertake work experience placements. In Year Two you will have the option of spending a minimum of ten weeks on a work placement, as part of the course. You will also be encouraged to find work experience and internships during holiday periods.

Trips and study visits

An international perspective is embedded within the modules of this course and reinforced by optional structured visits to major fashion capitals.

In Year One this includes a five-day study trip to New York to see the American market first hand, and visit Manhattan’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).

In Year Two you'll have the opportunity to visit some of Europe’s major fashion capitals such as Paris, Rome and Milan.

In Year Three you could visit an international fashion city such as Tokyo, with a week-long visit to one of the world’s most exciting and directional fashion destinations.

Exchange opportunities

You will have the opportunity to apply for a five-month exchange to the Fashion Institute of Technology, USA, in Year Two.

Where will I study?

You will study this course on NTU’s City site, based in Nottingham city centre.

Our Fashion Marketing and Branding teaching rooms are based in the Waverley building, a dedicated Art and Design building.You may have some lectures in other buildings across the campus, including our recently renovated Newton building.

You will be based in the Waverley building in an area that is dedicated for students on our Fashion Marketing and Branding, Fashion communication and Promotion, Fashion Management and International Fashion Business courses.

You may have some lectures in other buildings across the campus, including our recently renovated Newton building.

IT resources

You will have access to an IT resource room in the Waverley building, where the PCs are equipped with the latest design software you'll need for your course.

The University also has other IT resource rooms and PC clusters around the City site. Our PCs will give you access to:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Email
  • Web browsing
  • Networked file storage
  • High-speed online printing services.

The University’s main resource room in the library is available 24 hours a day.

Book and library resources

In our library you will have access to an extensive and diverse range of books and periodicals that focus on specialist areas within Art and Design. The library’s OneSearch system provides access to all our:

  • Electronic resources
  • Journals
  • Books.

We have a liaison librarian with specialist knowledge in Fashion Marketing and Branding. They will be in available in the library to give you detailed help in finding and using print and electronic resources. They can also help you with things such as Harvard referencing and research skills.
