This course, which is equivalent to SCQF level 5, is aimed at a wide range of people, from school-leavers to mature students who wish
to re-train. The course provides a foundation in electrical wiring and electronics, and has the flexibility to meet both current and future engineering trends. It incorporates approximately 90% practical ‘hands-on' skills and 10% classroom subjects. Satisfactory completion of the course will result in the award of a VQ in Performing Engineering. An SVQ Level 2 is a compulsory component of a
modern apprenticeship.

Please note: A person can only be considered for a modern apprenticeship if they are employed.

This course has no specific entry requirements however applicants will be subject to an interview and short test.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This course provides the foundation and flexibility to meet both current and future engineering practices. It is suitable for students who wish to progress to work within an engineering environment and forms the initial training for those seeking a modern apprenticeship in Engineering. The gaining of the award demonstrates a trainees competence in one or more of a wide variety of activities in engineering and manufacturing practices, such as a basic understanding of safety, recognising materials and the processes involved in engineering and the use of engineering drawings.

Time is spent in the workshops developing hand skills and skills in installing, maintaining and testing electrical systems. Completion of the course will allow successful students to follow a career in the private or public sector as craftsmen in an engineering industry, or undertake study at a higher level.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This course is mainly assessed on a continuous basis and does not include an external end-of-course examination. Coursework takes the form of reports, presentations and practical projects. Most of the assessment of student work is undertaken by College staff.

PROGRESSION ROUTES / CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Successful students may progress into apprenticeships, engineering related job opportunities and further education, e.g. NC Electrical Engineering Practice course.
