This unit is accredited by the SQA. Completion of the Unit gives you 1 credit at Higher (equivalent to 6 Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) credit points at SCQF level 6).

This Unit is designed to help you develop knowledge and understanding of the ways in which HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are spread, and ways of preventing this spread.

It will provide you with knowledge about the signs, symptoms and possible progression of each infection.

You will also examine the effects of prejudice and discrimination on individuals who have these infections, and think about way of challenging this.

Finally, you will investigate how people with the infection can use support services to promote their well-being.

The course materials are provided as web-pages for you to work through online. As you progress through the course materials you will find written explanations of each feature, followed by practical exercises.

You will be supported throughout the course by a specialist Distance Learning Tutor. Your tutor will contact you (via your North East Scotland College email account) within 7-10 working days of receiving your welcome letter and materials. As you progress they will continue to make regular contact to offer support and guidance, usually by e-mail but sometimes by phone, to ensure you are making good progress and to support your learning throughout. Please note that you must be able to study independently through the course materials.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be required to:

  • Explain the entry and spread of HIV and possible progress of the infection toward AIDS
  • Explain the entry and spread of Hepatitis B and C and possible effects of the infection
  • Explain how people's attitudes can influence the care given to those with HIV infection or Hepatitis B and C.
  • Evaluate how the carer can assist those with HIV infection or Hepatitis B and C to assume responsibility for the well-being of themselves and others.

Your Tutor will mark your all your certified assessments. Any re-submissions, known as remediation, will also be directed and remarked by your tutor. Your work will then be cross-marked by an in college subject expert, a process called moderation. It is only then that a result can be sent to the Awarding Body for certification.

A Pass is not final until all crosschecking procedures have been successfully completed. Your pass will be notified to the SQA for certification.

Assessments are booked through the BCD team.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no mandatory entry qualifications needed for this course. However, you may benefit from having been involved in working in a child, health or social care setting. It may benefit you if you already have the following qualifications, or equivalent:

  • Standard Grade at Credit level in any relevant subject
  • A course or Unit in Care at Intermediate 2
  • Courses or Units in any relevant subject at Intermediate 2
  • Scottish Group Award at Intermediate 2
  • SVQ or SVQ Units at level 2 in a related subject.
