Model fee and art materials are additional to the course fee.

Learner & Entry Requirement:

The course is suitable for learners with previous experience in portrait drawing and painting at levels 2 and 3; art students wishing to prepare work for their portfolio, artists/designers wishing to practise their skills in this specific area of art.

General & First Session:

If you have any of the following please bring them with you to the first session but do not buy anything specifically for the course until after the first class. Kae is unable to offer refunds for materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

A4 size sketchbook, 2B/4B pencil or graphite, 2-3 sheets of A1 size sugar or cartridge paper, box of assorted charcoal sticks, 2 charcoal tree sticks, white chalk/ coloured chalks, putty rubber. Students can also use support and materials of their choice such as pastels, acrylics, watercolours or oils. Individual choice of materials will be discussed and advice will be given. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Course Aim & Objective:

The course aims to establish a method of painting portraits, support individual expression, self-evaluation and the production of creative work from observation. This is a structured course focussing on the human head and the clothed figure.

Assessment:

Continual but informal assessment, advice and feedback on practical work produced within the course.

On this course you will develop the following skills and knowledge:

  • Establish and develop a working method for painting
  • Produce preparatory drawings from observation
  • Produce paintings from observation
  • Develop methods of self-reflection and self-evaluate work produced
  • Be introduced to contemporary visual examples
  • Use information technology to support your learning
  • Extend your knowledge through individual study such as library research, internet research and visits to art galleries

Progression:

The course can be useful for people who wish to attend similar art courses within Kingston Adult Education or apply to further art courses.

Your progress will depend on personal ability, enthusiasm, effort and attendance.
