The aim of this two-and-a-half-day residential module is to place the management of the higher education estate in its wider managerial context, and to identify the key challenges which this poses. Estate costs are the biggest element of most institutions' budgets, next to staff. The character of the estate also has a large, if unknown, impact on staff and student recruitment and effectiveness. On what principles might the estate be planned, financed and managed? How can aesthetics be reconciled with economy and effectiveness in new building? How will changing patterns of teaching, learning and research affect the demand for space?
