Module aims:

The overall module aim is to develop is to develop reflective practitioners with expertise in early literacy teaching and intervention who work with children and schools to overcome literacy difficulties.

In addition the objectives of the module are that teachers:

  • develop their understanding of reading and writing processes
  • become skilled at using a range of systematic observation techniques to assess and guide children's reading and writing progress
  • become skilled at recording information about children's reading and writing development, and using that information to guide teaching
  • become competent at using the specific Reading Recovery teaching procedures
  • are able to design individual instruction that assists the child to produce effective strategic activities for working on text
  • are able to critically evaluate their work and that of their peers
  • are able to guide the series of lessons and report regularly on the operation of Reading Recovery in their Schools.

Learning outcomes:

  • able to evidence change over time in child's progress
  • able to reflect on child's development of literacy processing strategies
  • able to analyse in depth the relationship between teaching decisions and child's progress
  • able to evidence knowledge and understanding of the reading and writing acquisition process
  • able to critically reflect on own learning and development
  • able to present case study reports and files that are clearly organised, use data and evidence to support discussion and are written to an appropriate academic standard.

Please note that this is a restricted module, open to qualified Reading Recovery teachers only.
