Course Content
Study of how media texts are constructed and how audiences and users respond to and interpret them. Candidates will demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skill in media production processes through research, planning, production and evaluation. You will need to engage in critical and analytical thinking about genre, narrative, representations and audiences in the media. There will be a mixture of practical classes and theoretical, formal lectures.

Course Content

Assessment Method
Year one: You will sit a 2 hour examination paper consisting of three compulsory exam questions. Candidates will submit a pre production task (20 marks), a production task (40 marks) and a written report (40 marks). Year two: You will research a media text (45 marks), create a media product (45 marks) and write an evaluation (10 marks). You will sit a 2 hour examination and will answer three questions.
Progression
AS Level There will be the opportunity to progress onto A2 Media Studies from this course A2 Level On successful completion of this course you may have the opportunity to progress onto a range of HE media courses, including Media Production, Film Studies, Marketing, Music Technology and Journalism.

Examination Board: WJEC This specification for Media Studies is new and is subject to alteration by the board Equipment and Costs In order to be able to study on this course you will need the following:
- 5 mini DV tapes
- 5 re - writeable DVDs
- Pens, pencils, textbooks, plastic folders for storing work You will also need an A4 folder with dividers in which you must keep all of your paperwork, handouts, notes, research, evaluations, feedback and assessments. Estimated cost: £70 There is an Art shop within the Arts Centre which stocks some of the materials and equipment listed above at competitive prices. Educational Visits During the course you will be required to attend a number of day visits to museums, TV studios, other colleges, Universities and, on occasions, residential visits. There will be a cost involved in these visits with the average being around £20.00 per visit.
Entry Requirements
Five GCSEs at Grade C or above. GCSE English at Grade C or above, or related subject is essential. Students should be able to demonstrate practical skills in 2D media.
