About This Course

NVQ Level 3 Spa Therapy - Business Studies - Health & Safety - Supervisory Management - Body massage - Stone massage - Anatomy and Physiology - Set up and monitoring of Spa wet room facilities - sauna steam, whirlpool spa, floatation bed - Spa treatments - wraps, muds, cocoon, floatation therapy, spa bath, steam, sauna - Self-tanning manual and spray - Aromatherapy body massage using pre-blended oils The qualification is based on continuous assessment and this will be awarded after a range of practical assessments, written papers and when assignments are achieved. - Compulsory: - 1 week work experience during term time to include written assignment.

The following equipment plus salon fee applies to cover costs of specialist equipment and product usage whilst training. - Spa treatment products - Blended massage oils - Uniform - Sarong - Shoes - Books Upon completion of the course, successful students may become members of professional awarding body to include professional liability insurance. The qualification is recognised to a standard to be employed in health spas and centres, with airlines and cruise liners. Working in a well stocked Dermalogica and Spa Finders retail salon. * Full training in professional product knowledge and treatment skills. * Additional training in spa and massage related treatments offered during industry week plus tasters in new technologies or products. Applicants must be prepared to receive all the treatments they learn during the practical sessions working with peers until procedures and health and safety are learnt. Minimum of 90% attendance required. INDUSTRY INFORMATION Income Many massage therapists are self-employed and charge a sessional or hourly rate, which can be between £20 and £60 an hour. With experience and skills in a range of therapies, earnings can rise to around £40,000 a year. You may also receive tips from clients and commission for the sale of beauty products. Figures are intended as a guideline only. Key facts: •There are 51,500 people working in the health and fitness industry. •There are over 3,100 private fitness facilities within the UK with 4,397,200 members. •There are just under 2,600 public health and fitness facilities, which have over 2,758,400 members. •38% of the workforce is employed full-time, 42% part-time and 20% self-employed. •Around 29% of the health and fitness workforce is aged 16-24 years (compared with 14% across all industries in the UK) South West – There are 53,700 people employed in the active leisure, learning and well-being sector, of which 4,100 are employed in the health and fitness industry. The region offers a range of opportunities for surfing, sailing, surf lifesaving, Tarka Trail, Camel Trail and coastal paths. Industry skills gaps in the region include: sport specific technical skills; communication; management; team-working; planning and preparing work; initiative; project management; and problem solving.

Entry Criteria

Suitability through interview; & references prior to start of course * Upon completion and achievement of Level 2 NVQ Beauty Therapy or equivalent and relevant functional skills - direct entry will be considered for exceptional mature applicants with relevant experience. * Motivated, enthusiastic, committed and of a mature disposition. *Positive reference and excellent attendance picture from Level 2 Personal Tutor or previous employer required. * Normal Gloucestershire college application procedures apply * Students who have a level 3 beauty or holistic qualification may benefit from accreditation of prior learning in consultation with a specialist curriculum tutor

Progression Details

On completion of Level 3 in Spa therapies: - Sports Massage - Stone massage - Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 3 - Holistic Therapies (reflexology, aromatherapy, holistic massage) - Salon/Health or destination spa employment - Foundation degree in Health & Complementary Therapies
