Case Studies

Tom Lawrence Company Director Sail & Paddle Ltd. Based at Croft Farm Leisure Centre, Sail & Paddle Ltd provides various water sports tuition. The lake has been open for business since the 1980’s with Sail & Paddle being established in 1990. Having worked at Sail & Paddle for the past 11 years, Tom Lawrence is now Company Director of the sailing school and runs all of the adventurous activities. The GC Outdoor Adventure Academy regularly uses their facilities and equipment for their activities. Sail & Paddle also have connections with GC through Tom and a number of his employees attending courses at the college. In addition, Sail & Paddle provide on-water training to the local fire and rescue service and team building activities for local companies. A big part of the organisation’s income is from their water sports sales and rental of equipment and facilities. Recently, the stand-up paddle boarding has become an increasingly popular water activity and a lot of centres are now trying to launch it to keep up with demand. Tom says: To be in this industry, you need to have a passion and heavy interest in teaching on the water. I would suggest to anyone who is considering entering the industry that they spread their talent as much as possible, so as not to become an expert in just one particular area. It is important to have a qualification in Outdoor Adventure as it provides students with great background knowledge into the industry. I would also recommend that students carry out a good amount of work experience as this provides them with a true insight into the industry and can see that a career within this industry, particularly if it were to be in a small company like ourselves, involves a number of additional tasks such as marketing, finance and admin.
