About This Course

To get onto the first step of success in hairdressing, take the Hairdressing NVQ level 1. It's designed to teach you all you need to learn to be able to assist a senior hairdresser in a salon. About This Course

To get onto the first step of success in hairdressing, take the Hairdressing NVQ level 1. It's designed to teach you all you need to learn to be able to assist a senior hairdresser in a salon. During to the course, you'll be continuously assessed through assignments and end of unit tests, as well as practical performances until you know how to shampoo and condition, blow dry hair and plait and twist hair into various styles. You'll also learn about health and safety, team working and the preparation of hairdressing services. By the end of the course you'll have a professional portfolio you'd be proud of. In addition to hairdressing skills, the industry recognises the importance of key skills - communications, application of numeracy and IT skills. Therefore, a part of your course will be spent on developing your ability in these areas. Students who have undertaken this course have commented on what a good introduction to the hairdressing industry this course provides and most learners do go on to the NVQ level 2 in hairdressing.

Additional Notes

You will need to buy a hairdressing kit, salon products, and a black tunic, black trousers and flat shoes for your uniform. You’ll also get the opportunity to visit trade shows and exhibitions as well as salons across the country. Some costs may be incurred as a result. You will be charged a material fee for the use if a range of salon products that will help you with your training. INDUSTRY INFORMATION Hours You would usually work up to 40 hours a week, between 9am and 6pm. This would usually include Saturdays with a day off in the week. Some salons open late on one or two evenings during the week. Part-time work is often available. You could also work freelance, either renting space within a salon or visiting customers in their own homes. Income Pay for trainee hairdressers is likely to be based around the National Minimum Wage. This will vary depending on age. Visit the GOV.UK website for details of the National Minimum Wage. Fully-trained hairdressers can earn between £14,000 and £20,000 a year. Top professional hairdressers can earn £30,000 a year or more, depending on who they work for and the salon location. Entry Criteria

The NVQ level 1 is an industry-recognised course therefore it is ideal for people who are serious about a career in hairdressing. You'll need at least a Grade E in GCSE English to be considered as well as a good work, college or school report. And because you'll be working in an image conscious environment, your personal style at interview stage will be considered also.

Progression Details

Once you've completed the course successfully, you may progress onto the NVQ level 2 course in hairdressing or beauty therapy. You must have also completed your key skills and have a good reference from your tutor demonstrating high levels of attendance, attitude to work and meeting targets. Alternatively you can seek employment in the industry or train as a junior hairdresser by undertaking an apprenticeship course.
