In this advanced course, similar to the BEng course but offering an extra year of study and a more in-depth approach, you'll develop the skills you need to play a senior role in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of major infrastructure.

As a civil engineer, you'll play a part in creating the built environment that surrounds us all. Bridges, airports, highways, buildings, railways…all present particular problems and challenges, and need efficient and effective engineering solutions. In this advanced course, similar to the BEng course but offering an extra year of study and a more in-depth approach, you'll develop the skills you need to play a senior role in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of major infrastructure. You'll have the opportunity to put these skills into practice during work placements, and gain insights into the industry through site visits, a week-long survey camp, overseas field trip and input from engineering companies. The course offers the flexibility to transfer to the Civil and Transport Engineering stream if you wish at the end of Year 2. Depending on the route you choose to take, you'll qualify as a civil engineer with specialist knowledge in civil and structural, or transportation, engineering. The course is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers, The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation and the Institution of Structural Engineers. MEng Accredited CEng (Full) This Degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). See www.jbm.org.uk for further information. You'll learn the fundamentals of civil engineering, then the specific skills involved. You'll develop skills in structural analysis, transport systems, ground engineering, water resource management and transport planning, to name a few. Year 1 Construction Engineering, Engineering Principles (Civil), Foundation Mathematics A, Construction Surveying, Civil Engineering Materials, Option Year 2 Fluid Mechanics, Structural Analysis and Design, Intermediate Mathematics, Soil Mechanics, Transport Policy and Systems, Option Year 3 Water Resources Engineering, Further Intermediate Mathematics, Advanced Project Management, Structural Engineering 1, choice of: English as a Foreign Language, Digital Mapping & GIS, Methods of Construction, Network Management, plus choice of: Highway Engineering and Transport Appraisal and Highway Design Year 4 Geo-environmental and Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Law and Contract Procedures, Individual & Group Project, Structural Engineering and Analysis, choice of: Water Resources Engineering, Traffic Models & Public Transport, Geomechanics, Analysis & Modelling Year 5 MEng Dissertation, Sustainable Project Design, Integrating Project Work 2, Engineering Futures, Forensic Engineering or Transport Policy, choice of two from: Foundation Design to Eurocode 7, Project Risk Management, Structural Dynamics & Earthquake Design, Transport & Traffic Models, Traffic Management Students of this course are eligible for the Best Timber-related dissertation prize.
