The course aims to provide suitable training and education for progression to get you to University or Vocational dance school or into employment.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is a nationally recognised qualification which is the equivalent to three A Levels.

Course Code: A3482 Minimum Age: 16 Start Date: 02/09/2013 End Date: 03/07/2015 Course Length: Two years Entry Requirements:

You will normally need to have at least one of the following:

At least four GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English)
BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject
An Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject
Appropriate training/experience.

You will also be expected to attend an audition/interview workshop day, where you will be required to participate in practical activities, perform a prepared audition piece and undertake a short interview. Dates and venue for the audition/ interview workshops will be given to you by the Admissions Team once you have made your application

Dancer; Personal Specification

Key Tasks:• preparing for performances by rehearsing and exercising;
• performing to live audiences
• studying and creating choreography;
• discussing and interpreting choreography;
• learning and using other skills such as singing - for example musical theatre, requires a combination of performance skills;
• taking care of the health and safety of yourself and others, which requires knowledge and observation of physiology and anatomy, as well as safe use of premises and equipment to avoid injury
• develop research and rehearse/polish performances in your own time
• liaising with arts and dance organisations
• managing the day to day running of the theatre, including front of house duties

Personal Specification
As a new member of the company, you will need the following skills and experiences;

• previous dance training/experience
• commitment to the work and flexibility in times of rehearsal and performance (you will be required to work evenings)
• ability to memorise choreography
• ability to take direction, accept criticism, and work well under pressure

Assessment:

Assessment is on-going throughout the course and requires you to complete projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Assessment activities that you may undertake include participating in practical workshops, rehearsals, performances, coursework, research, keeping journals, writing essays, giving presentations, discussing and evaluating work.

Academic Progression:

After this course you can apply to universities and dance schools furthering your training in specialist dance styles or performance studies. This qualification is fully recognised by higher education institutions.

Career Progression:

After the course, if you want to get a job straight away you could work in entertainment, theatre, performance, dance administration and fitness industry.

To become a professional dancer, a further three years training at university or vocational school is recommended.

Full Description:

The units studied are Performance Workshop, Performing Arts Business,The Historical Context for Performance, Rehearsing and Performing, Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Singing, Contemporary, Choreography, Musical Theatre, The Healthy Performer and more.

Assignments will be given by your tutors throughout the course and will take a wide variety of interesting and different formats. Learning is also supported through access to the College library and learner resource centre and pastoral and financial support services.

All tutors have specialist professional training and experience in the performing arts industry. Our state of the art facilities include three purpose built dance studios located in the city centre. Each studio is mirrored with a sprung floor, air conditioning and P.A system. Our 200 seated theatre has an excellent lighting and sound system and rehearsal space.

Annual departmental trips are organised. Past trips have included New York, Italy, Paris and London. Termly outings include a range of theatre shows, professional workshops and workplace related performance activities.

To date students have performed at The Playhouse, Lava, London Palladium, Norfolk Dance Regional Platform, Bodyworks Community showcase and many more.

Past students have graduated onto vocational schools such as; Laban, Urdang, LIPA, Performers, Masters, BodyWorks, Stella Mann, E15 and universities including: Middlesex, Liverpool John Moores, Chichester, Surrey and Dartington. Past students have also entered straight into employment including work in the fitness industry and as professional performers.
