Course Code: A5248 Course Length: One year Course Schedule: Attendance is over 4 days per week (to a maximum of 22 hours per week). Some classes may have a 6pm finish. Entry Requirements:VRQ level 2 Beauty Therapy. Candidates will also be required to go through another interview and complete a successful trade test. They will also show a willingness to adhere to the dress code as laid down by the awarding body.

Core Skills:Within this course you will learn; electrical treatments to the face and body, Swedish body massage, Sauna, steam & hydrotherapy treatments, electrical epilation, massage using pre-blended oils, UV tanning & figure diagnosis. There are also units covering health & safety and salon management/promotional activities. Training with an advanced skin care range will also be given. Additional units in Indian Head massage, Stone Therapy treatments and self tanning may also be offered to candidates who show extra commitment to study.
Functional skills in IT will also form part of the course.
Assessment:The course is assessed both practically and by means of written tests taken at the end of each unit. Evidence from these will go towards building a portfolio of evidence. Practical assessments must be undertaken on paying clients and must be completed in a commercially acceptable timescale.
Some other written work will be required for projects and assignments, some of which will take the form of group work. There will also be a separate written anatomy & physiology exam.
Students will also be expected to undertake research for work to be completed in class.
Academic Progression:A foundation degree in salon or spa management although candidates would be required to have been employed in the beauty industry first in order to gain the necessary industrial experience.
Career Progression:As a fully qualified beauty therapist you could be employed in a salon, health spa (in the UK or abroad), cruise liner, hospital, leisure centre or clinic. You could work as an educator/trainer for a skin care company and there are also limited employment opportunities as an in-flight beauty therapist on long haul flights. Teaching is also an option, but 5 years industrial experience is required first.
Full Description:The qualification which is achieved on this course is NVQ level 3 Beauty Therapy, which is validated by the awarding body VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust). Students are expected to achieve at least 90% attendance throughout the course. Attendance which falls below this may result in the qualification not being awarded. It is important that students have a mature and professional attitude as the beauty profession is a highly demanding and disciplined one. Personal appearance and professional appearance must be of the highest standard throughout the course.
Students need to be highly motivated and capable of long periods of home study in order to complete work packs and underpinning knowledge.
Students should also be prepared to volunteer for extra curricular enrichment such as helping in college events e.g. open days, fashion shows, the Royal Norfolk Show and other off site activities.
Work placements in salons can be arranged for students showing motivation, but a part time job in a salon would be most beneficial to the students and would be encouraged by the staff.
Students should be prepared to take on a supervisory role both in the salon and beauty therapy reception at certain times of the year in order to cover the health and safety and management content of the course.
Costs:Beauty Kit and Uniform Costs:All students are required to
purchase the following;
Level 3 starter kit – approximate cost £130
Level 3 epilation kit – approximate cost £110
Salon uniform (including shoes) £80
A deposit will be taken at enrolment to the suppliers for each
kit.
