Full Time

Sociology is the study of societies, how they shape people’s ideas and behaviour and how people interact together to shape their social world. It provides you with an understanding of why individuals and groups behave as they do. Sociology combines well with most other subjects in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, including English, History, Psychology and Business Studies.




This course promotes an interest in the world around you, develops your ability to enjoy discussion /debates, teaches you to analyse and evaluate evidence and arguments and present a well-argued case. The topics and issues examined on this course include the family and education, income and wealth differences, poverty, changing patterns of employment, gender, ethnic / racial inequalities and age groups in the UK today.



How you will gain the qualification

The AS qualification consists of two modules. Topics in Socialisation, Culture and Identity, Exploring Socialisation and Identity. The latter is in part examined through pre-released material. The A2 programme consists of two modules, Power and Control: Education and Exploring Social Inequality and Difference. I


What qualifications you need

A minimum of 6 full course GCSEs grade C or above, one of which must be English Language is required.




Entry to A2 is conditional on achieving grade A*-E at AS level.


Where to next

AS and A2 Sociology qualifications are recognised as meeting general entry requirements for all British universities. AS and A Level Sociology are also seen as providing excellent preparation for a wide range of degree level courses in Arts, Humanities and Social Science subjects and are viewed as particularly appropriate for those considering careers in public services such as police, teaching and nursing or professions such as law, journalism, marketing, management or public relations.
