Course Content
Sociology is, put simply, the study of society. It is about understanding how societies work and the way these societies shape people's behaviour. Sociologists study an enormous array of topics from the sociology of employment to the sociology of food or sport! Social theory is important in sociology; not all sociologists think the same way about society and we will examine their thoughts and beliefs, weighing up arguments and evidence. It is not about finding an absolute answer, but considering the many different viewpoints and evaluating these. Below is an idea of some of the questions you will consider during your studies. AS Unit 1 Culture and Identity:
- Why do young people form subcultures such as 'Chavs' or 'Emos'?
- What is McDonaldisation?
- How have ideas about masculinity and femininity changed?
- What is Britishness and does it still exist? AS Unit 2 Education with Research Methods:
- How does class, ethnicity and gender impact on achievement?
- How are some students labelled by teachers?
- Why do students form anti - school subcultures?
- How might we research education? A2 Unit 3 Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods:
- Why has there been an increase in girl gangs?
- Why are the police more likely to arrest some people than others?
- Why do people commit crime?
- Is sociology a science?
- How should we carry out research on offenders? A2 Unit 4 Mass Media:
- Does media violence create violent individuals?
- How are different social groups portrayed in the media?
- What has been the impact of new media such as Facebook and online 'blogs'?
- Who decides what we see?
- How might the news be biased?

Progression
A-Level Sociology is recognised as a pre - requisite for university study and a large number of degree courses involve some Sociology including those in Anthropology, Criminology, Economics, Education, English Literature/Language, Health and Social Care, History, Journalism, Law, Media, Policy and Politics, Psychology, Forensic Science, Teacher Training, Theology and more! Aside from further study, A-Level Sociology is relevant to a number of career areas including academic research, charity fundraising, legal work, police, teaching, or even running for MP!

No previous knowledge of the subject is required. However, GCSE English at Grade C or above is essential.
