The course will cover some of the varying facets of portraiture throughout art history, its applications and meanings, from recording the likenesses of royalty and aristocracy, through the rawness of self-portraiture, to the social or personal document of today. Sessions will cover quick portrait techniques such as continuous line and stick and ink More formal modes including armature of the face expression, under-painting and over-painting importance of observation, capturing personality and caricature. Art media used will include, pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolour, acrylic and collage. Each media will be exploited for its strengths in the subject of portraiture. Towards the end of the course students will have the opportunity to devise and complete their own personal project.



How you will gain the qualification


An Individual Learning Plan is used to provide an on-going evaluation of the learning experience. The completed work will be assessed at the end of the course. An external assessor visits the college once a year. Learning units are accredited by Agored Cymru.


What qualifications you need


This course is suited to beginners and those with some experience of art who would like to broaden their knowledge.


Where to next


Agored Cymru accreditation is recognised by colleges in Wales and England. Part-time students could progress through a variety of units at different levels, building a portfolio of achievement which could lead to full-time study on art, design and media related courses.
