Intermediate Level Apprenticeship (ILA) in Decorative Finishing (Painting and Decorating)
The course is aimed at those who wish to pursue a career in painting and decorating.
In the two years of the course you will cover:
- Safety
- Erecting and dismantling working platforms
- Preparing surfaces for painting and decorating
- Applying paint systems by brush and roller
- Store materials and equipment
- Applying basic specialist paint finishes
- Moving and handling resources
- Conforming to effective work practices
- Hanging wall coverings (vertical and horizontal)
Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) are an integrated part of the course.
Attendance at college is 2 days a week.
All parts of the framework have to be completed to gain the whole apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements:
Interview required
You will be assessed for your potential to
achieve the apprenticeship. The assessment will depend on the level
and range of activities you will be undertaking in the
workplace.
You may need to undergo an initial assessment of your English and
maths skills in which you are required to be working at or towards
level 1.
It is recommended that you have gained a minimum of 4 GCSEs at
grade D or above (or equivalent).
At the start of your apprenticeship programme you will need to be
employed by a suitable and appropriate employer for at least 16
hours a week. You also need to have been a resident in the EU for
the past 3 years.
Commitment and motivation are necessary to complete the course.
Assessment:
Assessments and portfolio building in the workplace and college, online testing and exams.
Progression from this course:
Progression onto advanced apprenticeship in decorative finishing.

Course Costs:
There are currently no fees payable by young people on Apprenticeship programmes. Fees may be payable by the employer where the candidate is 19 or older. Details available on request.
