How you will gain the qualification

As this is an academic subject, students will be expected to sit exams at the end of the academic year. Exams are a way of proving the extent of what you have achieved over the year and the department offers plenty of support to students who are not used to being examined.

The GCSE exams are:

1. Controlled Assessment March

2. Oral Examination April

3. Two Written Examinations (1 hour per paper) End of May/June

The controlled assessment comprises an individual and group speaking task, and a written component. The task is given to students one month before the date of the assessment. This means that there is plenty of time to work on the assessment.

The oral examination is a group discussion of one of the modules studied in class. The written examinations papers test your reading and writing skills on these modules. Many of the exercises you will complete during the course come from previous exam papers, and you will be coached on exam techniques prior to completing any formal assessment.

Both the Controlled Assessment and Oral Examination take place during the normal class hours with the lecturer. The Written Examinations can only be taken during the day and part-time students with work commitments will need to make appropriate arrangements nearer the time.

What qualifications you need

There are no entry requirements for this course, and applications are welcome from all members of the community.

Where to next

You may choose to study this subject for your own enjoyment, but career opportunities are created from possessing a qualification in Welsh such as teaching, translating, interpreting and working with businesses that require communication in Welsh. Languages combine well with any subject now that more H.E. Institutions are offering greater possibilities to continue language study. A study of language requires imagination, self-discipline and the ability to communicate. These are highly desirable qualities for prospective employers and language students are being employed in an increasing number of careers.
