Full Time

You will complete a programme comprising of core and optional units including, Anatomy, Physiology, Risk assessment, Fitness testing, Sports coaching, Rules and regulations and officiating in sport, Nutrition in sport, Psychology of sport, Practical sports, sports injuries and work experience. The advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification (WBQ) will be included in this programme of study alongside additional study in essential and wider skills. The WBQ gives greater breadth to students learning, providing the skills and personal qualities that employers and HE institutions are looking for. How you will gain the qualification

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded as a pass/merit/distinction. Students are also expected to complete the necessary guided learning hours for this qualification.




Assessment will be in the form of written assignments presentations, practical performance, the delivery of coaching sessions and a successful work experience.


What qualifications you need

Five GCSE’s at grade A* to C, including English Language plus Maths and/or Science. Alternatively a Level 2 diploma in a relevant subject at Merit level with GCSE in science or maths and English language at grade C. An active interest in sports participation, coaching or officiating is compulsory.


Where to next

Students achieving the second year of the programme – (The Extended Diploma in sport) will be able to further their academic study within Higher Education institutions, alternatively students may find employment in the Sports/Recreation/Leisure industry eg sports coaching, health and fitness, HM forces, Police, Fire Service.
