Skills for Working Life - Introduction to Vocational Learning
General information
This course is suitable for applicants who are unsure which vocational route they would like to pursue as a career and/or need to further develop English, maths and ICT. The aim of this Certificate course is to explore a range of vocational subjects and to develop the skills and knowledge required to pursue further education in a vocational subject at Level 1 and then beyond. All students receive regular tutorial support.

Course content

- Vocational tasters
- Functional Skills (English, maths, ICT)
- Personal and Social Development (PSD)
- Work Skills
Vocational tasters will include:
- Catering (compulsory)
- Carpentry
- Horticulture
- Business Administration using computers
- Motor Vehicle
- Animal Care
- Hairdressing
Students will be required to develop an understanding of vocational subject knowledge whilst at the same time develop their skills in English, maths and ICT. In addition students will develop employability skills through the PSD and Work Skills aspect of the course.
The programme will be supported by appropriate educational visits in which all students will be expected to participate.
Teaching and assessment
Assessment is continuous and consists of collating material for portfolios, observation of practical skills and successful completion of 3 functional skills exams. The course team will review students’ progress formally three times a year in relation to the course aims and their individual development targets.
Entry requirements
Successful Initial Assessment of English at Entry 3 and Maths at Entry 2 plus basic IT skills. Evidence of excellent attendance and timekeeping at school. Moving On Plan (139A assessment) or similar evidence. Report from most recent school or training establishment
Additional course costs
Steel toe capped boots are required for workshop sessions, overalls for motor vehicle and shoes and uniform for Hairdressing.
Progression
Students will be required to achieve the EDI Entry Level 3/Level1 Certificate in Skills for Working Life in order to progress onto a Level 1/Level 2 vocational course.
