General information
The course is for young people with severe learning difficulties who wish to access further education but who need support in becoming confident within the college community. Classes will be in small groups of six and will be supported by learning assistants. The purpose is for learners to gain confidence and independence within the college community. All students will receive tutorial support from a personal tutor.

Course content
The course is for one year and will promote an understanding of interpersonal relationships and decision making, enabling the learner to recognise themselves as adults. It will introduce the students to college life and encourage appropriate participation in the use of college facilities and workshop areas. The programme consists of studying:
- Gardening
- Cookery
- Art and Craft
- Using ICT
- Community
- Road Safety
- Relationships
- Healthy Living
- Woodwork
Teaching and assessment
Assessment is continuous and consists of collating material for a portfolio drawn from participation on the course. Teaching and learning takes place through practical activities that enable learners to develop skills in realistic environments. Learners will review their personal progress with their personal tutor. The course team will review students’ progress formally three times a year in relation to the course aims and their individual development targets.
Entry requirements
Applicants must be able to:
- Communicate appropriately with staff and other students
- Participate in a group
- Use college facilities safely and appropriately
- An ability to address their own personal needs or access to arrangements to support this
- To fully participate in all aspects of the course
Moving On Plan (139A assessment) or similar evidence. Report from most recent school or training establishment
Additional course costs
Educational visits and activities, including the opportunity to take part in a residential visit to Wood Lodge. Safety boots or shoes.
Progression
Students will be working towards the achievement of an Award in Personal Progress and to develop the skills needed to progress onto our Accessing the Community programme.
