General information

The BTEC Level 3 in Public Service course is one year course and is designed to give learners the opportunity to gain a realistic idea of what a career in the Public Services can offer. Learners will have the opportunity to visit a variety of Public Services and will also gain knowledge of the industry from a wide range of speakers.

To be successful in this industry, it is important to have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to communicate with a range of people, have a commitment to develop your own personal qualities, be enthusiastic, energetic and have a keen interest in developing skills and techniques.

The BTEC Level 3 in Public Service course is one year course and is designed to give learners the opportunity to gain a realistic idea of what a career in the Public Services can offer. Learners will have the opportunity to visit a variety of Public Services and will also gain knowledge of the industry from a wide range of speakers.

Course content

Units may include:

  • Government, polices and the Public Services
  • Leadership and teamwork in the Public Services
  • Discipline in the Public Services
  • Fitness testing and training for the uniformed Public Services
  • Crime and its effect on society

Various voluntary opportunities will be available both on and off campus. Learners are expected to participate in these.

Teaching and assessment

Continual assessment throughout the year and a number of assignments both written and practical. Learners are required to complete a portfolio containing evidence of assignments, practical performance, presentations, group exercises and discussions.

Learners are given plenty of help and direction from staff and are encouraged to undertake their own research and additional reading.

A stringent fitness programme is an integral part of the course.

Entry requirements

  • 4 GCSEs, grade A* - C or equivalent (must include English and maths), or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services (or related subject at Merit grade or higher).
  • Compulsory attendance at a Public Services Information Event
  • Applicants must also attend taster day which is usually at the beginning of July

Learners with the higher number and GCSE grades, or Distinction on the BTEC Level 2 Diploma will be signposted to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma 90 in Public Services qualification.

Additional course costs

There will be a cost for uniform which is to be confirmed. All additional trips and visits must be paid for prior to the event.

Progression

Learners who achieve a Merit grade and have a good student profile throughout the year may have the opportunity to progress on to our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services programme.

All of our BTEC Level 3 in Public Services are recognised routes into Higher Education at either HND or Degree level study, and carry UCAS points.
