What will I study? The course would begin with an introduction to corsetry (a brief history, appropriate fabrics, different methods and styles of corsetry and hardware). Students will then be able to choose from a range of corset style patterns to explore the relevant techniques while making up the corset. These techniques, which are transferable to any type of corset, will serve as a firm foundation for future adventures in corset making:
- Tracing, marking & cutting
- Preparing your fabric and using fashion fabric
- Basting fabric to coutil
- Sewing pieces together
- Creating channels and inserting spiral/steel boning
- Covering and inserting the busk
- Eyelets and lacing techniques
The following will be provided on the course: Boning; Coutil; Eyelets; Corset String; Busks; Card and Thread. Students will be expected to bring their own corset material to the sessions as this will be specific to their individual taste.
At the end of the workshop the students will have learnt how to make a traditional corset in contemporary fabric and also be able to take away a finished corset in their size (or standard industry size 10/12).
How will the course be delivered?Through classroom based activities alongside a tutor and other delegates at a similar level.
Course Entry CriteriaA practical understanding of basic hand and machine sewing is essential and knowledge of garment construction techniques such as cutting on the bias grain, pattern making and sewing terminology would be beneficial.
