Who is the course for?

The course is suitable for those who own a digital SLR camera and would like to learn about the many ways of creating effective landscape photographs. Additionally this course would be suitable for employers looking to train staff in the use of DSLR cameras, where such knowledge may be beneficial to their business or organisation. This course can be seen as a progression from the ‘DSLR – Beginners’ course also offered by Blackburn College.

What will I study?

Students will learn about their camera and how best to use it to create landscape images. The student will learn how to use DSLR camera techniques and supplementary equipment and environments to create a variety of landscape imagery.

A series of taught location photography sessions will challenge the student to engage with digital technology whilst at the same time allowing them to explore how to create an effective landscape photograph. The tutor will regularly review the developing portfolio and advice will be offered on how to further improve the images.

Course Content will include:
• What is a landscape image?
• Effective camera controls and techniques such as focusing and exposure control for making striking landscape photographs
• Recommended supplementary equipment
• Using software for image management and post production techniques
• Presenting the finished landscape photograph

During the first part of the course you will learn how to take control of your camera and how to adjust the lens aperture, the shutter speed and the ISO to achieve effective exposures. You will also learn about creative focusing techniques and how to control the ‘depth of field’. The histogram is a valuable way of understanding the brightness range in your photograph; you will see how easy it is to use this tool to make better exposures.

You will be taught how to set-up your camera to achieve better quality images, especially for printing and how RAW format may be preferable to JPEG particularly in processing an image via a suitable piece of software. Controlling white balance within your photographs is important for practical and creative purposes and you will see how this can be done.

You will enjoy practicing these lessons when out in the landscape and through the analysis of your photographs as they are made, you will learn how to place the elements within your image to create balanced compositions and we’ll help you to realise how important a tripod and filters can be in creating exciting images!

You should have a reasonable level of fitness to take part in this course. You need to be comfortable carrying your camera equipment and a tripod whilst walking up to two miles on uneven ground with a certain amount being uphill.

Back at the hotel, your tutor will review your work, celebrating your successes or showing how images can be strengthened at the taking stage or through post-production using software such as Photoshop. Upon completion of the course you will receive a high quality print of your favourite image.
