Description
The BTEC First Diploma in Science course lasts 1 year and may be studied part-time or full-time. The part-time course is intended for students in appropriate employment, whilst the full-time course is intended for those eventually seeking a science-based career. It is also intended for those that do not have the appropriate qualifications required for entry to the BTEC Nationals (Certificates and Diplomas) and A-levels in Science. The course provides a broad education in Science and it also gives an introduction to laboratory skills needed at work.

Core Subjects include: Science and the World Work, Scientific Principles Option Subjects include: (4 must be chosen): Chemistry Applications; Physical Science Applications Anatomy & Physiology, Environmental Science, Biological Systems, Plants and Food, Working with Science Forensic Science Applications Science in Medicine
Entry Requirements
The Part time course does not require any formal qualifications but candidates would be expected to be employed in a laboratory capacity and should show some evidence of numeracy and literacy competence.
Delivery & Assessment methods
The course is assessed by a variety of methods including assignments, practical exercises, projects and examinations
Progression
The course provides access to the BTEC Level3 National in Pharmaceutical Science, Dental Technology or Applied Science (Laboratory & Industrial, Forensic or Medical Science).
