Who is this course for? The BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science is a practical, work-related course designed to provide career development opportunities for those already in work or as preparation for those considering or seeking employment in any area of science. You must have a genuine interest in and an aptitude for science. What qualifications or experience do I need ? You will be expected to have at least one of the following: A BTEC Foundation Certificate in Science or a related subject. A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to a 4 GCSEs at Grade D including Science, Maths & English. What will I study ? All students take the 3 core units: Chemistry & our Earth Energy & our Universe Biology & our Environment We will then select other modules to complete your qualification, in the past these have included Biotechnology, Chemical analysis and detection and investigating human behaviour. The 3 specialist units selected are: *Physical Science Applications *Biological Systems *Working with Science How will I be assessed ? All units will be assessed and graded with a pass grade and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. To achieve a pass grade, you must complete ALL units and a minimum score of 340 is needed for a merit which is needed for Level 3 progression. All units will be assessed by assignments/projects/exercises set by your tutors and marked internally. You will be expected to keep a portfolio of your work. What qualifications could I achieve ? You achieve the nationally recognised BTEC Level 2 Diploma which is equivalent to 4 grades A* - C at GCSE. What can the course lead to ? With further training and study, you can go into careers such as Forensic Science, Food Technology, Analytical Science, Quality Control, and Environmental Science. The BTEC Level 2 Diploma also prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to go on to do more advanced courses such as: BTEC L3 Subsidiary Diploma, Diploma or Extended Diploma in Applied Science, or related Science/Technology areas in Science. For students age 19+ at the start or who will celebrate their 19th birthday during the course and who have had a break in their education, progression to Access to Science or other related Access courses is a possibility. How do I join the course ? You will need to complete an application form and be interviewed by a member of the course team or other designated interviewer. Will I need an interview ? Yes. Are there any extra costs for equipment/materials ? While every attempt is made to keep the cost to the candidate to a minimum, the college reserves the right to charge candidates amounts over and above published fees in response to any additional charges from the awarding body. Candidates will, however, have to purchase a lab coat for use in chemistry practical lessons.
