This is year one of a two year course. It is ideal for students who wish to study the art of acting as they wish to pursue the subject in higher education or possibly, drama school. This is a highly practical based course where students are continually assessed through the performances they do combined with supporting written work. The academic work is mainly in a Logbook form, although reports, research portfolios, practice diaries, essays and presentations are also required. Please remember drama is a literature subject; therefore reading, analysing, writing and reflecting on the subject area is vital to succeed. Students will be taught the necessary skills to perform as an actor and be part of a company within the first year through the units taught; whereas in the second year, students are expected to work in small groups to create devised performances to establish and demonstrate what they have learnt and the type of artist they will become. Students are guided by their personal tutor through the application process of moving into higher education or drama school as well as assistance with the preparation of auditions. Students are encouraged to attend the term-based trips organised by the department as well as take an active part in the opportunities posed by outside companies and practitioners. High achieving students must have an excellent attendance and punctuality record, manage to meet deadlines both practically and academically as well as have a genuine love for performing and learning lines.
