Who is this course for? These courses are for students who wish to study English as a second or additional language, maths and the language of maths. They are particularly suited to students who cannot commit to studying full-time, and for whom progressing to the next level of ESOL in one year is not a great priority. They may also appeal to people who wish to apply for a U.K. passport and need to demonstrate to the Home Office that their English is improving. Students will study all skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking but will need strong emphasis on reading, writing and study skills to progress language learning further. What qualifications or experience do I need ? Applicants must be a permanent resident, refugee or asylum seeker. Applicants will need basic study skills and will be assessed at their interview to determine whether they will be able to make adequate progress and complete the course successfully. Successful applicants must be able to commit to attending a minimum of 85% of their lessons (5 hrs per week), completing their course work and attending exams. What will I study ? The course will cover the following topics: > Speaking > Listening > Reading > Writing > Grammar > Vocabulary > Numeracy and English > Study Skills > Life in the U.K > Tutorials with your personal tutor * How will I be assessed ? Assessment will be through: > Initial interview and test > Continuous classroom assessment > Examination for ESOL > Examination for Numeracy What qualifications could I achieve ? > Cambridge University Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life for any one or more of the following skills: Speaking & Listening, Reading, or Writing. Every student will do at least one ESOL exam. If the tutor judges you are ready to pass other exams, they may give you these exams as well. > City & Guilds Certificate in Numeracy What can the course lead to ? Students who successfully complete this course may choose to progress to a similar or higher level of ESOL course, other Barnet College courses, training or employment. To progress to a higher level of ESOL course, it is necessary to pass all three exams; Speaking & Listening, Reading, or Writing. Because this is a part-time course, many students will not be ready to take all three exams at the end of the course. Those keen on progressing quickly should also consider a full-time course. How do I join the course ? Students can join the courses at the main enrolment in September or during the year if places are available. Applicants should contact Course Information for further details on 020 8266 4000 Will I need an interview ? You need to attend an interview, do a test and complete an application form; we will then place you on a class to suit your needs. This may take more than two hours. Are there any extra costs for equipment/materials ? All students will pay a registration fee. Students in receipt of some benefits will not be required to pay course fees, so bring any benefits documentation you may have to your interview. Information about course fees will be available at interview. Small equipment and trip costs may be charged. The tutor will also recommend books such as a dictionary. Further Information All students will have a named tutor who will advise and monitor progress in language & numeracy learning and advise students on how to make the most of their classes. Students can be referred to Student Services for assistance, guidance or support.
