What You Will Study

Terms 1 and 2
Most of the learning takes place outside the classroom and takes advantage of our location near the coast, rivers and moors which creates a diverse programme of activity and gives a real, hands-on approach to learning.

As part of the programme you will also go on several expeditions away from the College to improve practical and teamwork skills and to make progress towards gaining NGB awards (previously Dartmoor, North Wales and Cornish sea cliffs).

What’s involved?

  • NVQ Level 2 in Adventurous Activity Leadership
  • Level 3 Award in Day Walk Leadership
  • Level 3 Certificate in Skills and Activities for Sport and Active Leisure (Outdoor Education)
  • Level 2 Award in Employment Awareness in the Outdoors
  • Level 2 Award in Activity First Aid
  • An intensive programme of skill development in both water and land-based activities
  • NGB awards in the following are also available alongside the main qualifications:
    • Kayaking and canoeing
    • Mountain leadership
    • Rock climbing
    • Sailing and power boating
    • Mountain biking
    • Lifesaving

Term 3
With the help of Bicton College’s industry contacts and support from your personal tutor, you will undertake a work placement in an outdoor education centre. These placements often lead to full-time employment; past students have worked in outdoor centres all over the UK and abroad.

Functional Skills
You will also work towards nationally recognised functional qualifications in English, Maths and ICT.

What Next?

Students may progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure), progress to an advanced apprenticeship, or access employment as an instructor in an outdoor centre.
