General information
This is a one year level 3 programme. It is an ideal course if you wish to either build on Health and Social Care programmes of study that you may have taken before at Level 2 or GCSE or if you wish to study this area for the first time.
Course content
This vocational course requires 3 days in college and 1 day a week to be spent on placement. During your time in college you will study a variety of units which will add up to 90 credits. Units you will study include:

- Health, safety and security
- Development through life stages
- Anatomy and physiology
- Personal development
- Sociology

One day a week will be spent on placement practice. Our skilled placement officers will discuss with you the requirements of the course. You will attend two different placements which could be in the following:
- Care homes
- Nursing homes
- Youth clubs
- Primary schools
- Nurseries
- Family workshops
- Rehabilitation centres
The remaining day you will spend working on assignment work, unit tasks or carrying out research. All assessment is by course work and there are no examinations. Assessment is in a variety of ways which could be essay writing, reports, observation or presentations.
Entry requirements
One of the following combinations is required to enter this course:
- 5 GCSEs A-C including English Language at grade C or above
- BTEC Level 2 Diploma at a merit grade and GCSE English Lang at grade C or above
- BTEC Level 2 Diploma at a merit grade and a Level 2 equivalent qualification in English

Enhanced CRB check (currently £44).
Progression
There is an opportunity to progress on to a further year of study to achieve an Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. This requires completion of all units to at least a Pass grade, satisfactory completion of placement hours, attendance at or above the college requirement. Students who progress on to and achieve the Extended Diploma will be able to apply for university, employment or higher education course. Students can apply for nursing, social work, teaching, youth work or other vocational degrees as well as subject specific study in areas such as psychology, criminology and public health. Students who do not progress on to a second year of study leave to related employment or apprenticeships.
