Forest School is an inspirational process for enabling people, usually children, to learn and thrive outdoors. It is ideal for teachers who want some ideas and techniques to safely take their class outside either to further curriculum topics and simply to let their children grow in confidence and understanding.
It is for child minders and play workers who like to work outside in imaginative and creative ways and need help with activities and risk assessment and an insight into learning and development. Forest School is becoming an important part of many schools’ provision.
Forest Schools are developing throughout the UK and can be used within a variety of disciplines to enhance and enrich young people’s lives. Forest School is an idea whose time has come!
Forest School Practitioner Award Level 3
This qualification enables individuals to become Forest School Leaders. In addition to this, the award enables you to run an alternative or complementary curriculum within the outdoors. The course will be a mixture of practical and theory sessions. Course Tutor will be Alan Bruford who has been a Forest School trainer and proprietor of Escot Education for ten years.
Course Content
Module titles:
- Practical work in outdoor areas
- Promoting self-esteem in outdoor areas
- Development and learning in the outdoors
- Emotional learning
One optional module:
- Child Development or
- Personal Development
Students will also need to attend a residential training session and a First Aid course.
Undertaking the Forest Schools Practitioner award will enable you to motivate and inspire groups and individuals to enjoy the outdoors in a safe and nurturing environment whilst providing a unique learning experience.

The cost of this course includes a relevant first aid qualification and overnight residential.

- Possess an interest in working with children / young people in the outdoor environment
- Have completed a relevant Level 2 or above qualification (i.e. PGCE, Playwork, Youth Work) along with 2 years’ experience of working with client group or portfolio
- Show proof of a current CRB certificate
- Be aged 21 years or over
- Have appropriate IT & academic skills
