Who is this course for? This is a ONE Year Full-Time revision course designed for students who wish to retake their GCSEs in the 3 Science subjects plus GCSE Maths & English What qualifications or experience do I need ? You will be expected to have at least a grade D in core science and grade D in Additional Science. We will consider BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Science, subject to your performance in the pre-enrolment test. You will also be expected to demonstrate through assessment, a standard of literacy and numeracy suitable for a level 2 qualification. You must have a genuine interest in and an aptitude for science. Who is this course for? We will consider BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Science, subject to your performance in the pre-enrolment test. You will also be expected to demonstrate through assessment, a standard of literacy and numeracy suitable for a level 2 qualification. You must have a genuine interest in and an aptitude for science. What will I study ? All students take three 3 units covering such topics as rates of reactions, metals and their uses, energy from reactions, chemical changes in the atmosphere and basic organic chemistry. How will I be assessed ? All units will be assessed by one hour written exams consisting of short structured questions and at least one longer response question. Each paper accounts for 25% of the overall marks and your work will be assessed for the quality of your written communication skills. You will also have to complete Investigative Skills Assignments which are used to assess chemistry practical work and scientific data handling. This accounts for the remaining 25% of the marks. . Lessons will consist of lectures and lab based practical exercises as appropriate. Extensive use is made of current classroom technology and field trips. You will also attend tutorials and if required additional workshop support is provided. What qualifications could I achieve ? On successful completion of this course, you will achieve GCSE certificates in each subject studied. What can the course lead to ? This course designed to provide career development opportunities, as well as a good preparation for progression onto AS/A level chemistry or vocational science courses at Level 3. How do I join the course ? You will need to complete an application form and be interviewed by a member of the course team or other designated interviewer. Will I need an interview ? Yes, before you can enrol. Are there any extra costs for equipment/materials ? While every attempt is made to keep the cost to the candidate to a minimum, the college reserves the right to charge candidates amounts over and above published fees in response to any additional charges from the awarding body. Candidates will, however, have to purchase a lab coat for use in practical lessons.
