Who is this course for? These courses are for students who have been identified by the JCP as having ESOL needs. The courses are short, intensive courses 12.5 hours a week for 12 weeks. They are only for students who are referred by the JCP. Students will study all language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening, maths and the language of maths and IT, and employability skills. There is a very strong emphasis on employability skills and this topic is reflected throughout all language work on the course. What qualifications or experience do I need ? Students will be assessed at specific JCP ESOL Advice and Guidance interview sessions each week to determine which level class they should join. What will I study ? The course will cover the following topics: " General English with an emphasis on employability language and skills " Listening and speaking with an emphasis on presentation skills, interview skills and telephone skills " Reading and Writing with an emphasis on language work to enhance employment skills - letter writing, reading job advertisements " Computer Aided Language Learning with emphasis on employment skills " Study and work skills " Numeracy and English " Life in the UK " Personal Development " One to one tutorials with personal tutor " Educational visit How will I be assessed ? Assessment will be through: " Initial assessment and interview " Weekly assessment task " Final assessment tasks " Continuous classroom assessment " Speaking and Listening Exam What qualifications could I achieve ? College Certificate What can the course lead to ? Students successfully completing one course can progress to further ESOL into Employment courses provided they are referred by the JCP, or to other Barnet and Southgate College courses, training or employment. How do I join the course ? Students must be referred by their JCP and enrol following initial assessment at specific weekly Advice and Guidance sessions. JCP must provide appropriate paperwork. Courses take place regularly throughout the year. Will I need an interview ? Interviews take place at the specific initial assessment sessions when you will also need to do a short test. Are there any extra costs for equipment/materials ? There may be some charge for trips. Students must also provide pen and paper and the tutor may recommend a dictionary. Further Information All students will have a personal tutor who will advise and monitor progress in language and employability learning. Students can be referred to Student Services for assistance guidance or support.
