Hairdressing Level 1 Diploma

Make a start on a career in hairdressing and learn how to provide popular styles and treatments with the Hairdressing Level 1 Diploma. You wil develop skills in styling, dressing, shampooing, conditioning and colouring.

You will study 11 units covering the following:
- introduction to the hair and beauty sector
- presenting a professional image in a salon
- plaiting and twisting hair
- themed face painting
- nail art application
- skincare
- shampoo and conditioning
- styling women’s hair
- basic make-up application
- the art of dressing hair
- the art of photographic make-up
Individual learning targets are set throughout this course and you will receive regular feedback on your progress. Formal assessment is via assignments case studies, oral questioning and practical application.
You take part in classroom practical and salon sessions to gain hands-on experience of these treatments.

The qualification you gain is VTCT Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to Hair and Beauty. You also gain wider personal development skills vital for success in further study or employment. They include self confidence, working with others, taking responsibility and time management.
By the end of the course you will have benefited from a valuable insight in future study or careers open to you.

Applicants for a level 1 programme will normally have:
- a strong interest in their chosen programme of study
- the commitment to work towards improving English and maths as part of the programme
- the ability to discuss past experiences of education and future ambitions in an interview
Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an internal assessment. All students will have their literacy and numeracy needs supported within the programme.

Approximately one third of your time in college is classroom-based and you are set assignments and homework too. The remaining time is spent in the practical working salon to practise and perform different treatments. There is a strong emphasis on working and learning with others and you also need to be able to work independently.
