How will I be assessed?

By completion and subsequent assessment of unitised work books of evidence, collated through onefile e portfolio system.

What will I study?

Mandatory Units:
Unit 01 - Understand substance use/misuse
This unit examines the size and scope of drug use/misuse in the UK. Learners will gain an awareness of the reasons people use drugs and be able to categorise drugs, explaining their effects. The importance of attitudes and values and their effects on behaviour is also considered.

Unit 02 - Understand how to recognise and respond to substance use/misuse
In this unit, learners will consider the issues involved in recognising and responding to drug use/misuse. This includes signs and symptoms of drug use/misuse and the range of possible responses and services available. Learners will also gain a basic understanding of the laws relating to drug use/misuse.

Unit 03 - Understand the safe, sensible and social use of alcohol
In this unit learners gain an understanding of the issues and concerns around alcohol use/misuse. This will include the different styles of drinking and their potential effects. Learners will also gain an understanding of the responses to alcohol misuse in society and consider the impact of alcohol use among young people.
Unit 08: In this unit learners will understand the nature, extent and effects of substance use related blood-borne infections in the UK and how they can be prevented.

This course supports progression to other courses within health and social care.

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification; however, a basic level of numeracy and literacy is required to comply with the assessment aspects of the qualification.
