In the media-dominated world of the 21st century, wars are won and lost on television, celebrities seem more familiar to us than real life friends and our identities mirror figures from sport, music and fashion.
You will be taught how to analyse the various forms of media that we consume everyday, developing the ability to deconstruct advertising, film, television, radio and the press.

You will also undertake a creative project, applying the skills you have learned to create your own media products.

Trips to the cinema and industry-related places, such as the Museum of the Moving Image in London, are organised each year.

How long is the course?

1-2 years.

How will I be assessed?

Coursework and examination. Reading the media and textual topics in contemporary media are assessed by examination. Practical production assessed by coursework.

Success rates

A2 pass rate for 2012: 100%.

The college has a consistently high pass rate for the Media Studies A Level year after year.

The A level in Media combines well with Art and Design, English Language, English Literature, Film Studies, Psychology and Sociology.

What does the course lead to?

Careers in film, radio and television are all possible options for Media Studies students. Employment ranges from journalism and TV criticism to production and broadcasting, as well as a host of other varied and interesting opportunities.

What can I go on to study?

You can opt to study Media at university or gain access to other courses that link in with the areas covered on the A Level (Film Studies, Sociology and Public Relations for example). We also offer the HND in Interactive Media at West Notts if you want to stay here and continue into higher education.

Entry requirements

You must possess five GCSEs at grade C or above including English language or English literature or combined English. No prior knowledge or study of media is required.

How do I apply?

To apply, simply complete the A Levels online application form.

You don’t need to apply for each subject area you are interested in. Once we have received your application form we will invite you into college for an interview or audition where we will be able to discuss every aspect of the course you have chosen, as well as any alternatives you may be considering. You will also have the opportunity to visit the areas of the college used for your programme choice.
