How much does the course cost?

If you are a student from England*, you don’t have to pay for your course upfront if you are studying a degree for the first time. You can take out a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees each year. You repay the loan after three academic years (even if you have not yet completed your course. This is to bring you in line with full-time students) but only if you are earning above £21,000. If your earnings are below this, you can put your repayments on hold. There is a small amount of interest on the loan and if you haven’t repaid it within 30 years, it will be written off. Read more about the loan on the Direct Gov website: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

*Different arrangements are in place for students from other parts of the UK or from outside of the UK. Check with a Student Development Adviser in LiSS for more information.

The government does not provide any living costs support for students as you will be able to work either full or part-time or claim benefits if you are unable to work. Students with children can continue to claim any eligible benefits including tax credits.

In addition, the University of Cumbria has a fund called Access to Learning Fund (ALF) to assist part-time UK students with course-related costs such as books and travel and childcare for students with children. Please submit an application form after you have registered and we will let you know the outcome of your application within four weeks. Obtain the form either from LiSS on your campus or from the university website.

Course summary

This new degree is aimed at people wanting to work with children, young people and families. It covers a wide range of issues affecting children and families in today’s society. Generic modules provide a secure grounding in issues for all professionals working in multi-agency contexts with children and their carers. Pathway specific modules for Children, Young People and Family Studies provide a good stepping stone to a range of professions.
