We are looking for applicants who have an interest in fine art as an arena where ideas about the world can be made manifest through traditional and non-traditional means. We are keen to encourage those of an inquisitive nature who already have some skills (perhaps in drawing initially), and are generally prepared to work hard to achieve and develop practical and conceptual skills using a variety of media in order to present and convey their ideas effectively.

Adult returner students are equally welcome to apply and may not need to fulfil the entry requirements.

Course summary

Year 0 provides a stimulating and subject-specific introduction to the BA (Hons) Fine Art programme at the University of Cumbria. Our aim is to introduce students to an interdisciplinary approach to fine art giving emphasis to the importance of the integration of ideas and practice, of concept and process.

Students are introduced to, and will gain experience in a wide range of contemporary and traditional media. Practical work is contextualised and informed by art theory, drawing from critical, contemporary and historic perspectives.

Case studies

Martin Fowler, Pathway Leader of Fine Art Year 0 is an artist whose work is based in drawing and painting.

A graduate of both Glasgow School of Art and Winchester School of Art, Martin has undertaken residencies at the Dusseldorf Kunstakademie and the Anatomy department of the RVI hospital in Newcastle.

Following a six year period working as an art tutor within the Scottish Prison Service, Martin was invited in 2009 to become artist in residence at HMP Perth. The resulting publication, The Tension of a Line: A Portrait of Perth Prison in conjunction with University of Cumbria, and a solo exhibition at Perth City Art Gallery, presented drawings and paintings which Martin completed during that unique experience.

In July 2013 Martin will present Scotland the Brave – A Graphic History of Scotland from 1513-2013 at The Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh. The exhibition will present Martins recent monochrome drawings which deal with key events from Scottish history.

Martin is a dedicated lecturer with a firm commitment to the teaching and development of drawing both practically and contextually. The Year 0 course provides the ideal entrance route into Year 1 of our inter-disciplinary BA (Hons) Fine Art course.
