Why study Fine Art at Dundee?

Innovation and creativity are key to our success, preparing our students for a wide variety of careers in creative practice and industry.

You will have the choice of working across a wide range of media that includes drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, performance, film, photography, digital and computer based imaging, moving image, sound, artists books and creative writing. Through a combination of live projects, professional placements, workshops, tutorials and independent research you will gain transferable skills that include research, organisation, collaboration and presentation. You will also attend courses which will inform you about the history and theory of art. You will make, experiment, investigate and reflect and will establish your own artistic foundation.

Facilities and workshops

Fine art students have access to well equipped workshops for wood, casting and welding and a printmaking workshop with facilities for etching, screenprinting, lithography and digital printing.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • produce a work of art to a professional standard
  • manage your own projects to reflect your artistic expression and individual philosophy with good time management and self-reflective critique

Student exchange

The academic perspective is enhanced by opportunities for you to study abroad through exchange schemes that operate with centres of excellence in many European and transatlantic countries.

In addition, the department normally organises an overseas study visit for all Level 3 students.

Art & Media Programme

Fine art is one of three courses that comprise the art & media programme (art, philosophy, contemporary practices, art, philosophy, contemporary practices, time based art & digital film). This programme has an already established reputation as the only interdisciplinary arts curriculum in Scotland. The bringing together of three distinct pathways under the art and media programme offers a broad educational experience and access to a wide range of staff expertise while also allowing you to gain deep knowledge and expertise in your chosen subject pathway of fine art.
