AS/A2 Fine Art - Drawing, Painting and Sculpture (level 3)

This course is designed to enable you to:

• Develop fine art (painting, sculpture, multimedia, photography and print) related skills using a variety of media, processes and techniques
• Gain knowledge of historical and contemporary painters, styles and genres
• Use a specialist fine art vocabulary and terminology
• Gain knowledge of fine art through research, development and production of your own ideas
• Recognise and develop your own practical and critical strengths in fine art

Is it for me?

You will enjoy this course if you have an interest and natural aptitude for this subject and would like to undertake further studies in fine art, perhaps at art college or in further education, at HND or degree level.

Assessment is predominantly coursework based with some practical examinations.

What’s involved?

Induction

You will investigate and learn various skills and techniques that will enable you to work in a variety of materials with confidence and creativity. This will include using charcoal, ink, paint (acrylic, water colour and oil) and print making. You will also develop a range of techniques, such as creating composition, colour theory, perspective, anatomy and working from life – this will help you in your development as an artist.

Building On Your Portfolio

Themes such as the human form, natural environment or man and machine will be used to develop a selection of work for your sketchbook and portfolio. Work can include paintings, prints and/or 3D pieces.

Personal Investigation

This a practical unit with written elements (1,000 words) in which you are expected to develop a personal investigation based on an idea, artist, theme or movement leading to a final fine art response.

Final Project

In this unit you will extend your skill, knowledge and understanding of sculpture. You will create a body of work in either 2D or 3D that will answer the set question in a visually inventive way. You will need to look at the work of others, do observational drawings, take your own photographs, add annotation and do a final evaluation.

Entry Requirements:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including English Language.

It is necessary to show ability in art through either:

• GCSE Art (grade C or above)

or

• Level 2 BTEC Art & Design at Merit grade

or

• A portfolio of artwork to be presented for assessment

Which courses go well with this?

This course combines well with a wide range of AS Levels and BTEC Level 3 courses.

No more than two art courses can be taken together due to the large amount of practical work involved.

Progression:

Students who have previously studied Fine Art have gone on to embark on careers in Fine Art, Special Effects, Restoration, Animation, Art History, as Gallery Assistant, Teaching or setting themselves up as a practising Artist.
