Stroke Rehabilitation

You will learn with in a small group and be able to share your experiences of stroke care with others from different health care backgrounds and organisations. The programme aims to facilitate and support effective learning and develop your powers of critical analysis, evaluation and reflection upon professional practice related to stroke rehabilitation to an advanced level.

On successful completion of the course you should be able to critically analyse, discuss, evaluate and reflect upon theories, models and approaches to stroke rehabilitation; show a mastery of the complex nature of stakeholder contribution in stroke rehabilitation; demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the complexities of inter-professional and multi agency working in stroke rehabilitation practice.

Access to all university facilities is given. A range of resources are available online.

There is an emphasis on learning support throughout the course. The course is taught by an interdisciplinary team of tutors, clinicians and service users with expertise in stroke.

Students will be selected by application form. All students should be registered health care professionals. Students should be able to provide evidence of their experience in stroke rehabilitation.

Applicants for the PgC in Stroke rehabilitation must be qualified senior (band 6 or above) healthcare professionals with experience of working a stroke rehabilitation setting.

Applicants should hold an honours degree, or above, or equivalent, from a recognised Higher Education Institution. Where someone does not meet the standard entry requirements but has another relevant professional qualification such as a Diploma in Nursing, these candidates will need to provide evidence of post-qualification academic performance or range and depth of CPD.

It is highly desirable that you are competent in the use of ICT. If you feel you need to develop knowledge and skills in ICT, there will be an opportunity for you to co-develop this area of need whilst on this course of study and this can be achieved through accessing the Learning Information and Student Services (LISS).

Modules

Core modules:

• RPHH7300 Rehabilitation theories and perspectives (20 credits at level 7)
• RPHH7302 Contemporary issues in rehabilitation (20 credits at level 7)

Optional modules:

• RPHH7301 Reasoning and reflection in rehabilitation (20 credits at level 7)
• RPHH7305 Independent study in rehabilitation (20 credits at level 7)

Both core modules and one optional module must be completed for the PgC award.

Course summary

This 60 credit postgraduate course in Stroke Rehabilitation has been designed to meet the needs of employees working within the NHS and Social Care settings. Learning will take place in both university and in the work place, therefore employer support is essential for students to be accepted onto the course. It is suitable for those already working in stroke rehabilitation as qualified nurses or therapists who wish to develop their critical awareness of issues at the forefront of stroke rehabilitation.
