Course summaryThe programme has been designed to promote and extend your knowledge and skills relating to the study of physical education, sport development and health development. Students will develop knowledge in all three areas of study at levels four and five and will specialise at level six according to career choices.
All students are registered on to BA (Hons) Physical Education, taking a series of compulsory modules at levels four and five. At level six you have the option of enhancing your physical education degree by choosing two of a number of options in sport or health development.
A special feature is the five week, 80-hour equivalent, work experience placement at the end of the second year, where you apply your learning. We help you secure a placement in a school, in coaching, in sport development or in health promotion. Core modules prepare you for this experience and help you reflect upon it to enhance your personal and professional development. Across the programme assessment includes oral and poster presentations, a special study, coaching and teaching logbooks and portfolios, written and oral reports, including a laboratory report, essays, individual and group projects, and examinations (seen, open book and unseen). Approximately 75% is coursework and 25% examination.
In the transition period between level five and level six you are guided to your study of Physical Education with sport development, or physical activity and health development, whichever best suits your future career aspirations.
Case studies"The things I like about the course are the opportunities to actually teach, whether it be in lecture time or through the third year placement module. The lecturers are always available to talk to if you have a question or a problem. They are always willing to find out information if they don’t already know the answer." - Dan Grey
"My placement was a very exciting opportunity; it allowed me to see behind the scenes in sport and experience what life would be like working in that environment. The completion of our outdoor education module allowed us to travel to the Lake District for a four-day camp and included hiking, canoeing and orienteering. This was a great class bonding module, it was interesting, exciting and allowed us to learn outside of the classroom." - Jess Lawson
