It is expected that you will have some basic knowledge and understanding of writing for film and TV.
You will learn about the market for TV drama series, the various TV drama series genres, the range of UK and North West independent production companies and TV stations, and the processes of commissioning and script development. You will study a range of TV drama series in order to identify and critique how they create and develop characters and story across the series arc and within episodes.
You will learn about the pitching process; researching for dramatic accuracy; working as part of a writing team using storylining and script development; and the creation of original, dramatically truthful characters, settings and storylines that will engage specific audiences.
You will be taught through a mix of seminars, tutorials, workshops and lectures, including talks by guest speakers from the industry. Independent study is a key component of the course and you will be expected to organise and schedule your study accordingly. You will be expected to present both critical/analytical and creative work for seminar discussion and workshopping.
Your main assignment will be to create an idea for an original TV drama/comedy drama series, which you will then develop into a pitch document, and pitch to the class. As a member of a writing team you will choose which pitch document to develop, and then take part in storylining, writing and rewriting a script for one episode of the series your team has chosen.
