Description

This course will build on the knowledge you have gained through study on the Environmental Studies module or will further enhance the practical experience you have already developed through your work in the construction industry. It is a module of the HNC Building Studies but it may also be studied as a standalone course.

You will develop your understanding of the principles and techniques employed in the design and installation of services for domestic, commercial and industrial buildings. In addition, you will enhance your awareness of issues which influence the choice of building service system, for example building form, health and safety, economic and environmental considerations.

You will develop your understanding of the principles and techniques employed in the design and installation of services for domestic, commercial and industrial buildings. In addition, you will enhance your awareness of issues which influence the choice of building service system, for example building form, health and safety, economic and environmental considerations.

This is a practical course in which you will learn to apply your knowledge to the solution of problems based on real-life scenarios.

You will consider a broad range of applied topics including supply and distribution of gas, water and electricity; use of grey water; ground drainage; treatment and disposal of effluent; heating systems; energy conservation; ventilation; air conditioning; security and intruder alarm systems; fire detection; lifts, escalators and moving pavements.

You will learn through a mix of lectures, tutorials, coursework and personal study. Assessment will be on the basis of a design-based report and an exam which you will sit at the end of the module.

In addition to learning skills and knowledge of direct relevance to your career in the construction industry, you will develop your wider personal skills including teamwork, study and time management, oral and written communication, problem-solving and IT.
