This course is for anyone who is interested in children‚s learning and development, either to support their career aspirations or for personal interest. It is especially suitable for those involved in supporting children's education; for instance teachers, social workers, youth workers and publishers of children's literature.It will provide you with an understanding of the subject from several psychological perspectives and it will also enable you to evaluate the validity and usefulness of various methodological approaches.
You will study various areas of children's development and learning in the classroom and at home; for example, reading, writing, drawing, mathematics and science.

During the course of your studies it is expected that you will demonstrate a critical understanding of appropriate methodologies and current research, use critical thinking and evaluative skills informed by current research, and formulate and defend an argument using reasoned thinking.
You will be taught through a mix of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Assessment will be based on an essay and an exam. For both pieces of work you will be expected to consult primary sources such as journal articles.
