- Functional Skills Communication Level 2
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
Units covered There are 5 mandatory units:
- Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
- Promote additional services or products to clients
- Provide hairdressing consultation services
- Design and create a range of facial hair shapes
- Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques
You are also required to take a number of optional units, depending on credit size. Only one optional unit can be selected from optional group 2.

- Provide shaving services
- Provide face massage services
- Design and create patterns in hair
- Colour hair using a variety of techniques
- Provide colour correction services
- Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
- Create a variety of permed effects
Optional Group 2:
- Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
- Support client service improvements
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
Entry requirements You must be employed in a salon or barbers for at least 30 hours/week. Who is it for? A Barbering Apprenticeship is for anyone who’s serious about a barbering career. There are options to suit individual needs and aspirations – and if you’re already working in barbering, you could develop your skills to become a senior stylist. CostAged 16-18

Aged 24 and over
Total People require employers to make a contribution towards the cost for all learners aged 24 years and over, embarking on an Apprenticeship or Advanced Apprenticeship programme.
Duration 6 – 24 months Start date Available all year Assessment method The NVQ Diploma is assessed in the workplace or a realistic working environment. The qualifications are likely to call for a variety of assessment methods and the national occupational standards define what is to be assessed. Methods of assessment include:
- Observation of performance
- Questioning
- Knowledge assessments with both online and paper tests available
You will need an environment where you can develop your knowledge and practice your skills.
