This apprenticeship is aimed at people who have a keen interest in the technical aspects of motor vehicles and wish to train in light vehicle maintenance and repair. It will offer the opportunity to develop the sound technical knowledge base needed within the industry. The apprentice will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

The apprentice will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

The competency diploma at level 2 is made up of mandatory units plus a number of optional units to meet employer requirements. Examples of these units are competency in routine light vehicle maintenance and competency in removing and replacing light vehicle engine units and components.

The technical certificate is achieved through college day release and provides the essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles. Achievement of the framework will take approximately two years.

End Qualification:

Through the Institute of the Motor Industry the following will be achieved:
- Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence
- Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (technical certificate)
- Functional skills / key skills in English, maths and ICT at level 1
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

You will be assessed for your potential to achieve the apprenticeship including practical aptitude e.g through completion of the Bennetts Mechanical Comprehension Test (paper-based multi-choice). You may need to undergo an initial assessment of your English and maths skills in which you are required to be working at or towards level 1.

It is recommended that applicants have GCSEs at grade D or above (or equivalent) in maths, English and science.

At the start of your apprenticeship programme you will need to be employed by a suitable and appropriate employer for at least 16 hours per week (preferably for at least 30 hours per week). You also need to have been a resident in the EU for at least 3 years.

Commitment and motivation are necessary to complete the course.

Assessment:

The competency diploma at level 2 is assessed through a portfolio of workplace activities. The technical certificate element assesses knowledge through on−line multiple choice testing and by assessments set within the college environment. Functional skills / key skills are assessed by a combination of tests and / or portfolios. The Employment Rights and Responsibilities qualification is assessed through completion of a workbook. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills are evidenced through work and learning activities.

Progression from this course:

Upon completion of the ILA the learner could progress to an Advanced Level Apprenticeship (ALA), where opportunities exist, to gain level 3 qualifications and develop diagnostic and problem solving skills.

Course Costs:

There are currently no fees payable by young people on Apprenticeship programmes. Fees may be payable by the employer where the candidate is 19 or older. Details available on request.
