It extends the range and depth of skills and laboratory practices producing a laboratory technician capable of working within a team or with minimal supervision. Apprentices will complete the level 2 NVQ certificate and a technical component which may be achieved by following one of the following pathways:
- Laboratory and associated technical activities: educational science
- Laboratory and associated technical activities: industrial science

End Qualification:

- Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Laboratory and associated technical activities
- Level 2 Certificate in Laboratory Technical Skills
- Functional skills in English, maths and ICT
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

You will be assessed for your potential to achieve the apprenticeship. The assessment will depend upon the level and range of activities you will be undertaking in the workplace.

You may need to undergo an initial assessment of your English and maths skills in which you are required to be working at or towards level 1.

It is strongly recommended that apprentices have reached a minimum of grade D at GCSE (or equivalent) in maths, English and science.

At the start of your apprenticeship programme you will need to be employed by a suitable and appropriate employer for at least 16 hours a week (preferably for at least 30 hours per week). You also need to have been a resident in the EU for at least 3 years.

Commitment and motivation are necessary to complete the course.

Assessment:

The NVQ will be assessed through evidence of workplace activities and observations.

The Technical certificate and the Functional skills will be delivered on a block release basis at our King’s Lynn Campus.

Employee Rights and Responsibilities - assessed through completion of a workbook.
Personal Learning and Thinking Skills - evidenced through work and learning activities and completion of a workbook.

Progression from this course:

Progression could be onto the Advanced Level Apprenticeship for Laboratory and Science Technicians or team leading or management programmes.

Course Costs:

There are currently no fees payable by young people on Apprenticeship programmes. Fees may be payable by the employer where the candidate is 19 or older. Details available on request.
